The fires in California are awful- and I wouldn't consider them anything to be joked about. I have heard that some of them had beginnings other than natural.

So the image of a man looking over his destroyed home- while SMOKING a pipe is just...

To me that clearly shows how self-destructive Americans can be- they look over their own destruction- and then continue the habits that caused it! (not to say that this man smoking this pipe caused any of the fires- I'm looking at it more symbolically.)

I'd link the actual photo- but it's one of several in a Yahoo slideshow- it's picture 33 of 632 though.

I thought I heard this morning that they've establised that the main fire, and a few of the others was all started by Arsonists?

I could swear I heard they even shot and killed a guy who was Trying to start a NEW fire afer he tried to escape from the police & Run them over with his car.

I'd heard arsonists, but wasn't really sure- hence my saying 'sources other than natural.' ;)

I can't disagree with them shooting and killing a guy trying to start another fire, given how much devastation they've just caused.

Just the image of a guy smoking over the smoking rubble of his home...

Well the shooting & killing was more a part of "Oh Shit, he's trying to run us over/ram us" . :)

Yeah, it's not really his fault. The counties, the state and the cities really need to take the blame on this. Most of the developments there in San Diego County should never have been permitted. But there were out of staters who didn't know there's five year brushfire cycle even in the best of times. This time next year, all the burnt down houses will be back bigger and better and there'll be a new subdivision down the fire road.

Quick tip for So. Cal real estate: Never ever buy a house in Rancho . Those places all burn every five years. The one exception is Rancho Palos Verdes. All the Ranchos were developed in the late 70s and 80s during the land rush that chewed up the mountain sides. So every five years, those burn and when the rains hit, what's left slides down the mountain. Years two and three of the fire cycle, developers build new houses. Homeowners get two years of scenic luxury and then panic as they wonder if the fires will take their houses or not.

Greed isn't good. *makes note to self not to buy a house in anyplace with a fire cycle*

I wasn't trying to blame him- just the incongruity of the image just struck me.

Yeah, it's like the Philly firefighters who showed up to the fire out in our first apartment building. They were all chomping cigars and sucking on cigarettes as they pulled out their hoses and ladders.
