D'oh! That one sounded familiar but I've only seen it once so far and couldn't pull it out. (I DID just get it for my birthday though!!)

Hey, I got it for my birthday too! :)

You obviously need to watch it more. ;) Personally, I really love that first meeting scene with the singing and the dancing.

All the singing and dancing I found embarrassing. It was so Bollywood. And translated into English too! Ack!

I guess it was way too Bollywood for me. I mean, I love Bollywood - but only in Hindi :P

Well, I'm a sucker for a good musical- so it worked for me. Like Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, or Singing in the Rain, Moulin Rouge, all that stuff.

So don't worry, I don't think everyone in India breaks out into song at random, and not everyone knows all the dance steps from uterus. ;)

WooWoo!!

One of the things I love about that movie is that scene (I think it's that scene?) where Liam Nielson's like "So she...he...doesn't know you exist?" And the way the boy rolls his eyes and says "SHE". But I've long said that it will be a better world when my son or daughter can bring home whoever they want and my only concern is that my child is in love.

Yup, that's in the same scene with the line I quoted. 'Cause while it's great the Liam character added the 'he' it's such a child's response to do the eye roll and so on. I highly approve of the movie as a whole. :) (except I don't totally get the woman and her brother thing...)

Really? That's actually one of my favorite story lines -- the way that taking care of someone can take so much of you that you have absolutely nothing left, even though they have nothing to give you, will never get better. It blew me away.

Hmm, I guess I just wasn't looking at it that way. I saw it more as a woman who was unable to set any sort of limits or boundaries.

As such she lost a potential measure of actual happiness because she let someone else's needs totally run her life. To me that reads as unhealthy, and that she didn't actually positively benefit- like everyone else in the movie did. That and I guess I was also surprised that someone as ill as her brother was had free run to use a phone whenever he wanted.

I think it may also be a statement on the guy's outlook. Is he willing to be with this woman, despite her commitment to her brother?

Date: 2006-08-22 07:34 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jadecat.livejournal.com
I think there would have to be some sort of comprimise there- I can't imagine any romantic relationship lasting terribly long, or healthy, in which she drops him every time in order to see to her brother's needs. If she could set some limits with her brother- set aside time when he's not supposed to call, and then spend that time with her boyfriend. Something like that could work. But if every time he calls she allows that to completely disrupt whatever they're doing- that's not really workable for either.

It's driving me nuts because I KNOW #4 but I'm not placing it. I'm so bad with quotes! (I actually had to go to IMDB to pull mine because I can't remember them!

Well, I did try to pick movies that I hadn't seen other people use yet. :) But yeah, kinda hard to guess the movie if you haven't actually seen it.
