Vampire Diaries

Thoughts while watching the pilot for The Vampire Diaries... keep in mind this is coming from someone who read the original trilogy (+1!) when they were first published in the early 90s...

Okay, point the first- Elena was blonde/blue eyed. Yanno, Germanic looking. This is important later.

Point the second- Elena had a little sister, not a little brother. This change is okay, I'm good with it.

Point the third- Stefan and Damon are NOT from 'Mystic Falls' (or is it Crystal?) which leads to

Point the fourth- the story took place in Fells Church- again, minor quibble.

Point the fifth- Vickie was also blonde- she as supposed to look a bit like Elena, again this is important later.

Point the sixth- Caroline was a brunette (or redhead, on this I am fuzzy) with green eyes.

Point the seventh- where's the other friend... Whose name is escaping me. Elena had two good girl friends and then Caroline. Actually it appears that they took the two girls and blended them into one.

Point the eighth- Stefan and Damon are from Renaissance Italy, which is much more fun than them being from Mystic Falls.

I think I'll be done with points now... Bonnie's original prediction from Elena was that she would meet someone dark and handsome, who wasn't tall now, but used to be.

So while they got a lot wrong, it doesn't seem lik a bad show. *grins* Though I still am not getting why they had to make Elena have dark hair, and make Caroline blond. Blondes seem to be getting a bad rap. I AM liking the casting of Damon and Stefan, when I first heard that what's his name was going to be Damon I was curious, and it's really working for me.

"Wherever you go people die."

*look* "That's a given."

Makes me laugh.

Quite a lot of changes then :(

Yeah, but honestly, they're not that bad. I was having a bit of fun picking up on the changes- kind of a memory test for me, given that I haven't read the books for 15 years or so.

All in all, the show isn't horrid, and I'm going to mostly be looking at it as separate from the book series.

I'm undecided after the first 2 episodes

It would seem that a lot of your changes were forced by the costuming department.

This was copied from Cherrix Casting on Facebook. (Join their Friends/Fans list if you're in the GA area and would like to be in Vampire Diaries.)

This is what happens when you get the costuming before hiring the actors...

"We are looking for six guys (at least 18 yrs of age) to fit specific wardrobe requirements for costumes provided by us for the Halloween party scene this Friday night in Decatur, GA.

"If you are available all night Friday and match any of the following sets of sizes, please e-mail your photo/height/weight/age/clothing sizes AND phone number to vampirediariescasting@gmail.com (include FRIDAY WARDROBE MATCH in the subject line):

Costume #1 --- 15-16 neck, 40-42 coat, medium vest, 30-31 waist

Costume #2 --- 40 coat, 32-33 waist, 16/33 shirt,

Costume #3 --- 38 coat, 30-31 waist (small)

Costume #4 --- 42 coat, 16 shirt, 34 waist

Costume #5 --- 38 coat, 32 x 29 pants

Costume #6 --- 40 coat, 16-16.5 shirt, 32 waist"

That's just for extras, not for the principal cast.

Yup, gotta agree with the Frawg. They don't cast leads that way, just the extras.

Ahh yes... I have actually taken this off my DVR and will watch it when I remember on Hulu. I don't know if it is the show or me just having a less tolerance for longing stares and teen angst, but wow.

I remember the books with a fondness, and I don't like Stefan. Like... at all. I love the actor they've got for Damon, and he's great, but wow. Stefan is all kinds of stiff board/wall/piece of furnature. We'll see what I can see on Hulu, but it just made me go... no no no no no.

And I still have those books... need to dig them out somewhere, I know I kept them.

[identity profile] jadecat.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Stefan in the book wasn't quite the namby pamby nice guy as the show might be trying to make him out to be. Perhaps the actor doesn't quite know what the hell to do with him. Damon is spot on, I think. I'll watch it if I remember, but I don't think I'll go to any effort.

And yes, I still have all my books too. :) Now I think it would be fun if they would do a show based on the Secret Circle.

[identity profile] frawg-angel.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yea, the guy on the show does a great uncomfortable far-off stare, but I'm not sure if I would want to be around that person in person if they kept doing that.

I'm sure that the success of Vampire Diaries would determine if they did anything with Secret Circle. Unfortunatly. And I think I like SC better... hmm... have to go find those too...

BTW. Have you watched Glee?

[identity profile] jadecat.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, yeah, if I were around a guy that did that all the time I might suggest he see an eye doctor. ;)

Have not yet watched Glee. My TV watching is limited these days, I have low tolerance for watching stuff. I'm more listening to music while computing, or crocheting, stuff like that.

[identity profile] frawg-angel.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
then Glee is right for you, dear, which is why I keep reccomending.

Glee club. In school. Lots of music. Major funny. Good times. This one is not only on my DVR, but is one I am keeping the episodes to watch later and have been listening to the music on Youtube when at work.
