So a while ago I was looking for new music, primarily because I wanted to get something surprising for the husband for his birthday. Naturally, this led to my talking to losgunna about it. She recommended (among other singers) someone named Nicole Atkins. I'd never heard of her, and so some of her songs were played for me. Her voice astounded me. She has a full voice, one with actual depth to it!

I did end up buying her CD- Neptune City, but for me, not the hubby. ;) It's been playing quite regularly on my iPod ever since. :) And honestly... when I first heard "The Call" by Regina Spektor (the song is on the soundtrack for Prince Caspian) I had to wonder what Nicole Atkins could have done with it... Though I like the song as is.

So I must share. Embedding these two isn't possible- they've been uploaded to YouTube by Nicole (or someone using her name...), but do go watch/listen. :)

Definitely, get the entire album. The whole thing is just spectacular. If you like her, make sure you also get Neko Case's "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood" and Cat Power's "The Greatest".

It's a compliment. :) See, I'm not surprised that you're familiar with a group/sing I'm being recommended- since you're a... what's the music equivalent to a foodie? ;) You like music- a LOT. You have a LOT of music. This is why when I need recommendations- I go to you.

I'll admit to being an unabashed foodie, but I'm probably not as well versed in music as I would like to be...I'm just really passionate about the stuff I do listen to :) Most of the disks that you see at the house, though, belong to Jason...happily we share several similar tastes, so I get to share the cd love.

If you want, one of these days I'll get you copies of the mix disks we've put together to hand out. We've each done two, with various stuff on 'em, some of which I'm sure you already know.

Ahem...apparently Dagoski forgot to mention that his lovely wife got him tickets to see Nicole Atkins live in concert at his favorite venue.

Must say, I tend to prefer Neko Case to Nicole Atkins but both are terrific! Cat Powers is good, but listen first before buying. I am not as fond of her as Dagoski.

Umm... yes, he did neglect to mention that little detail... Now I'm definitely going to have to look into this Neko Case person.
