Jan. 20th, 2005 02:41 pmAh, happy- will be getting Robin and the 7 Hoods from NetFlix RealSoonNow (tm). Was worried since it got bumped last time and looked like it was going to be bumped again.
So, for a kinda sorta movie review: Saw "Bend it Like Beckham" (and if you don't know who Beckham is- shame on you! You do at least know who Posh Spice is, yes?) Is a MOST fun movie about an Indian young woman- Jess (Jessminda I think is how her full name is spelled but I could be way wrong) who wants to play football (that's soccer) and whose parents prefer more traditional behavior from their daughters.
I'm not quite sure how to explain why I liked it so much except that the family relationships seemed real to me. At the same time she's fighting with her sister/doesn't want the same things in life as her sister, the sisters band together against mom and dad. It's been lauded as 'an Indian My Big Fat Greek Wedding" which makes sense to me. Although, the at the older sister's wedding I did have to make a comment about her lack of henna'ed hands and feet (as elaborately seen in
imperfectmanx's wedding photos).
Secondly, saw "Love Actually" for the second time. I really enjoy that movie, as does the Beau. Have I mentioned we're highly sappy people? This movie is a telling of the lives of 10 people and love in the 3 weeks before Christmas. Some of the actors: Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, and Kiera Knightly. (incidentally, Kiera is also in "Bend it Like Beckham")
According to the Beau he could never understand Hugh Grant's appeal until he saw him in this film (playing the brand new Prime Minister- which is a hoot!). I personally loved the kid who played Sam- step son to Liam Neeson's character. All the stories were fun and romantic, and it has Colin Firth in it. :)
Thirdly- saw "The Believers" starring Martin Sheen. Basically this recently widowed cop shrink gets mixed up with Santeria- and an evil practioner of said religion. There's good people involved- who try to protect the man and his son (and new girlfriend) using Santeria, but apparently the bad man is just that much stronger. It's *shrugs* eh. Not fabulous, but it wasn't too bad either.
My main reason for watching it is that my character in Mage: the Ascension practices Santeria. I play it fairly lightly- the girl is very naive, and the other characters (so far) seem to think it's cute that she carries around a chick (which is always named Little). She carries the chick because you never know when you're going to need to sacrifice something. So she's cool with sacrificing animals to the spirits, yet in many, many ways is sheltered and naive. So much fun to play.
Next up: Robin & the 7 Hoods, Bill Engvall: A Decade of Laughs, and Funny British Ladies (or some such- a collection of British comediennes). I like movies, and I like watching comedians.
