Ups and Downs

Today has been a strange day...
First off, I found out that Astaire was adopted by a family that visited him on Wednesday night, this was a bummer.
Then I found a job posting for a assistant librarian job, full time, no masters degree required. Pay is slightly higher than what I'm currently making (though I reach my one year point in three weeks and may/should get a raise at that time) with benefits. Which at this point is merely interesting. Must think about it.
Then hubby called, the capri pants we purchased for me a Meijer over the weekend were too big, hubby said he'd exchange them today. I've had them in my car all week, I was just lazy about taking them back. Well, they are now all out of them. So he returned the one pair, but now I don't have a replacement. This is a bummer, they were really cute.
Right before I left for lunch my boss called me into his office- and said he wanted to buy my lunch today and gave me $10. I have no idea why. This was a plus, though weird.
So I had asked the hubby to get me a cookie with my Quizno's. Shouldn't have, but I wanted one. They apparently don't have the chocolate chip cookies anymore and instead I got an M&M cookie. Though tasty, it's not the same thing.
And I'm just really, really tired right now. Last night was a tossing and turning and sleeping a little kind of night. Which may be why the downs seem lower and the ups lower as well. That and it seems like every time I try to be careful and stop to think about things- they slip through my fingers. Don't like that.

Date: 2006-06-23 07:40 pm (UTC)With the librarian thing... I found it by accident really... but I think I'm going to have to try for it. I want to go to graduate school- and this job could really help me out with that (if I got it). The pay isn't great, but it's a touch more- and in the right career field.
Leaving here would be hard though- I really, really like the people I work for. Who do weird things like buy me lunch. But... at the same time the librarian job? Right career field. So, I think I kind of have to apply for it. Which jut again brings up all the old nervousness about references and so on. I still don't know what to do about that.

Date: 2006-06-23 08:08 pm (UTC)That said, the library field in a pretty serious state of flux right now. No one's really sure what the institution will look like down the road and exactly what the job of a librarian will be. When you go to school, you ought to take a strong systems load with a focus digital libraries and some kind of human computer interaction work. I really need to figure out what my electives are going to look like. I have professional experience in the digital aspect of digital libraries and some in the library aspect as well. So I have to think about what augments what.
Anyway, what having that library job will do is increae your starting salary post grad school. The base public library salary can be as low $25,000/yr. Having as little as two years experience will bump you up to $30,000. In areas with a lot of jobs(read coastal metro areas), the starting salary is mid thirties with experience putting you to about $40,000/yr. Working in academia as opposed to public libraries, you starting salary would be high thirties to mid forties. You get more if you have a lot of subject area expertise or if you have prior experience in the field, or technical experience. Plus, as a University librarian, you often qualify for tenure. Seriously!

Date: 2006-06-23 08:35 pm (UTC)Digital archives, or non-digital in a museum setting, would be where I would most likely find myself. U of M has a museum certification program that you can do concurrently with a Masters program- which is something I've been wanting to get into. I think that having actually worked in a library could only help me.
What you write makes much sense. :) Which goes along with what I've been thinking about, making me think that I really do have to try for this. The starting salary is slightly about $26k, plus benefits.
They prefer someone with a second language and library experience- but do note that this is an entry level position. They just posted it and are accepting applications up through July 5. So I think this weekend I'll be brushing up on my resume and work on writing the best cover letter ever.
And in the meantime here, make sure everything is up to date and ready for someone new to step in.

Date: 2006-06-24 02:38 am (UTC)You seem like you need it.
Zap me if you need more, I carry spares.
As far as the position, go for it. It costs you nothing to try.
