This time he asked for the CEO, I asked him where he was calling from, and I got his name and company. Luckily for me, I didn't have to lie when I said the CEO was in a meeting and could I help him. He simply said he'd call back and hung up. No drama.

But still- he called back!

Joss Whedon

I've seen many posts mention the new Joss Whedon show Dollhouse. I must admit that I am interested.

There's so much to love about Joss's writing, the quips, the quoteability. However... I do have one major gripe.

No one gets to be happy.

Ever.

If someone is happy for a minute- they must suffer abjectly the next. See: Angel.

This is a problem for me- because I do LOVE Joss and the shows he's worked on. Mostly. I understand that he thinks misery and people suffering is fun to write about, and that it's more interesting than anything else. I just don't totally agree.

I fully contend that you CAN take a couple and write interesting stories about them. Happy doesn't have to equal boring. Mostly Joss's gripe seems to be with couples. Name one successful couple he's written for that has lasted.



I'll wait.





Yeah, I couldn't do it either. He's a talented writer. But his preoccupation with destroying couples, and general misery, does detract from his attraction for me. This is why while I loved Firefly, I didn't really like most of Serenity. (plus, what happened to the Western in Space concept? But anyway.)

I want to like him. I really do. I want to watch Dollhouse and like it. But I don't want to get into another show and get annoyed and frustrated by yet another couple that's routinely destroyed and angsting all to hell. What to do?
