Thanks
figmentj for the following links. :)
Firstly- Scalzi's take on gay marriage is both funny, and makes a good point.
Secondly, I've commented on Battlestar Gallactica before, generally with some confusion and not quite knowing if I really like the show or not. It IS generally well written, the stories are intense, and I like the concept. But there was still something that was bugging me, and Greta Christina nailed it pretty well in her entry. For those that don't want to follow the link, she writes about the lack of humor on the show, and why it's important that it's overlooked. From my point of view, I do think that Starbuck can be a very funny character. The original Starbuck was as well, but this is a totally different kind of funny.
NOTE: I am still in season 2 (like Greta Christina) so PLEASE do NOT spoil it for me! Thanks!
I read through her comments and see that people mention that Baltar and Six are quite funny- and that is true. However, it's not a shared humor, not really. Most of the other people seem to have had their senses of humor removed. It doesn't seem realistic to me to have this large ensemble cast- and yet none of them react to the terrible tragedy without some level of dark humor about it. The fellow crewmates might not find the joking appropriate, but to have no one react that way? (that I've seen) That just doesn't make sense. I dunno, it just seems a lack. But I will continue watching the show, just because now I'm hooked and want to see where it's going.
What keeps coming to mind for me is my Mage character, Claire. I played her for something like 5 years, and was quite attached to her. At one point she was looking in on someone (magically), got caught up with what he and his fellow students were doing, and caught on fire. It was a very close call for her because she couldn't do anything to save herself, and the people around who tried to help botched their rolls... *laughs* At the time I did get a bit panicky because as I said, I was attached to Claire. She made it, they were able to get the fire put out, and the very first thing that came to mind, and what she said to her team mates was "Well, I always did admire the Human Torch."
In other news... The Great Purge has begun... I think I scared the hubby. *grins* See, last night I came home and was in the mood to clean. Well, sort of clean. Basically it involved the kitchen and bathroom (primarily) and just throwing away things that were of no use. Managed to fill three garbage bags (with hubby's help!) and have far less clutter in both rooms. The cleaning products only really came out for the kitchen. See, we've had stuff just kind of put on the top of the fridge and left there. Well with some rearranging and tossing useless items, the cupboards above the fridge are actually being used- freeing up space on top. Moving everything showed me how dusty the top had gotten, and it had to be cleaned. The bathroom is next- the counter top has a LOT less stuff on it, so moving everything to really clean will be a ton easier. Then there's just the rest of the place to go through... That one will take longer, as it will involve clothing, probably books, and Leo's room. The books I may offer to people here- as they definitely aren't 'throw away' items. (The clothing isn't either, but I'm likely going to be donating that.)
Thus is the State of the Anne at the moment. Though it happened again, I woke up and was quite alert, feeling good! Got to work, sat down to start writing this and got very, very sleepy. Dunno what's up with that.
Oh, and dragons to ignore...
