Ahh... the Weekend
May. 8th, 2006 09:34 amStarted off fun- Friday night I had to run a few errands on my way home, stopped by Kroger for Soda and then went to PetSmart (Shop Smart, shop PetSmart... anyhow...) for Sasha food. At PetSmart they have a section devoted to cats from the Humane Society. In one of the little areas (they're not really cages, there's no wire or anything, more like cubbies with plexiglass) there were four 8 week old kittens, all boys, two black long-haired and two tabbies with white. Looked like two sets of identical twins. The "awww"s could be heard for miles. ;)
Went home and was allowed in because I had procured Sasha food (Leo still has a bunch- and yes, they get different food since Sasha's technically a 'Senior' cat). Worked out, on the Ellipse and did the strength training stuff. Was told that strawberries and (lite) cool whip do not a dinner make.
Watched "Ultimate Avengers" - which was just fun. I think Thor was the best part, and pretty much made the movie. Their particular version of Bruce Banner was interesting too, a mix of abuse boyfriend and alcoholic ('I'm so sorry, it won't happen again,' 'It'll be different this time.' and 'I can control it.' etc).
Saturday hubby and I went BACK to PetSmart- as I had forgotten to see if they had refills for the Feliway diffuser (note: they don't). We went to visit the kittens again, this time there were more people around, so the 'Awww's could be heard for counties. ;) Outside was the CAHS adoption van with puppies. We went over to take a look.
That was the first mistake because that's when we met Joey- a 3 month old golden retriever/german shepherd mix. And quite possibly the cutest puppy on the planet. We visited for awhile, and then left to see about a couple other things. Then we went back to see Joey, and spent some more time- talked to them a bit about his health history and stuff. Then went in to price out all the stuff we would need to get him (crate, food, dishes, leash, collar, etc). Then went BACK to see him, and headed home to debate.
Joey was such a sweet, mellow fellow. The only reason we were really considering adopting a puppy was because it was him. He was fostered with cats- and had the right temperament to deal with ours (one hiss and he backs off and looks for something else to do- which works with Sasha). He'll lick your face once or twice, but then he's done and content to sit on you (so not slobbering all over). Just in general an extremely sweet puppy. Would have been perfect. So Hubby and I had to debate. In the end we decided to go back the next day after hubby got out of work and if he was there we were going to adopt him. We had stopped by the office and spoke to the woman working there about the additional pet deposit and monthly charge- and she said she'd write up a letter of permission and slip it under our door. (The CAHS may have wanted to verify we could have a dog at the apartment, but the apartment office isn't open on Sunday). We never did get the letter from her.
The CAHS was scheduled to be there from 11-3, hubby got out of work at 12, and by 12:45 we were there. Sadly, Joey was not. Apparently we were also the third family to ask about him. A guy called Joey's foster mom last night and was there while CAHS was setting up Sunday morning and adopted him. To say we were slightly disappointed would be an understatement. We knew we were taking a risk in waiting (I could have gone first thing without the hubby, for example), but we decided to take it. Also seems that it was more responsible, and the better thing to do, to wait and debate and discuss and make sure that it was something we wanted to do. We've been talking about getting a dog down the line, so the idea wasn't new. We just kept saying 'not now' at least until we met Joey. We just didn't want to make a snap decision, and wanted to be sure that this was something we really wanted to do.
I guess now we at least know that we are willing to adopt a puppy right now, and make all the necessary sacrifices it entails. We're not going to go out and actively look for a puppy to adopt, but we'll be more open to the idea should we run across another one- and hopefully not let that one get away.
After that it was distraction time- which lead to Soldan's for the Feliway refill- and then Schuler's Books. Hubby picked up a YA book he'd heard about- Book Thief by Markus Zusak- that has Death as the narrator. It looks interesting- and funny in a rather sarcastic kind of way. Death explains that he can be amiable, and affable and that's only the A's. But not nice, nice doesn't enter into it. Me, I picked up the first two Dark is Rising books. Totally forgetting to look for the Jasper fforde books. I even remembered while I was there- and then got distracted by something- stray oxygen molecule perhaps.
Pretty tame evening followed, a nap (I had a migraine), then TV, then shopping, dinner and more tv. Pretty good night by my standards. Though my imagination was busy Saturday and had painted Joey into the household, so yeah, still a bit disappointed. I can't fault how we did things, but still.
