Vitamin C- people are told all over the place to take the stuff- it prevents illnesses, helps you recover from said illnesses faster, and all that good stuff. My own mom (an RN-C or some such designation) told me that she takes a vit-c pill everday and hasn't had a cold/the flu in years.
Umm sure, this is good. Unless of course you have a 'sensitivity' to the stuff. See, when I was a kid I was allergic to things like citrus fruits- all citrus fruits. In other words- no lemonade, no oj and no fruit punch for the little cat. Okay, we can live with that, can be weird when going to friends houses, but it's okay. And hey, in elementary school when all the other kids were drinking punch I got my own bottle of Coke from the teachers lounge- now how cool is that?
Oh, and on top of that let's add an allergy to sodium ascorbate- a vitamin C additive that's in almost ALL cereal. This left me able to eat Capt'n Crunch (Crunchberries were my favorite- and it is possible to eat all the beigy colored squares and THEN eat the berries if one has the patience and persistence, it amazed my mother that I was one such- hmm, early signs of obsessive compulsive behavior? ).
Yeah... I became a label reader real early on. Although, it did make things easier for my parents (well, at least as far as I was concerned, those three hooligans who came before me I won't speak for). See, a complaint I've heard is that you take your kid to the grocery store and they see the cereal aisle and go nuts- wanting everything in sight. With me I would beg for something and get told to read the label. If it had sodium ascorbate in it- I couldn't get it. Since almost ALL cereals have the stuff, well then it got real easy.
Right, so that was 20 years ago. Now I'm all grown up (or something) and can have citrus fruits and sodium ascorbate... in small quantity. See, apparently my allergy didn't totally go away. Too much vitamin C is not a pleasant thing for me. I don't get a rash or an asthma attack or anything, oh no, I get canker sores. Yay. For quite awhile I would get these obnoxious pain-filled spots in my mouth and wonder why. Then somewhere along the way I read about the connection to too much vitamin C. Problem solved it seemed. But see, for most people they have to work fairly hard to get too much vitamin C. Oh no, not me. I can drink orange juice three days in a row- small bottles- and end up in pain.
With one exception- if I'm sick. If I have a severe enough cold I can drink nothing but oj and be fine afterwards. As I've discovered, the severity of 'sick' does matter. This past week- I was out sick for two days. I was miserable, head all stuffy, and when I did come back to work I would take a morning break and hit the cafeteria and grab a 20 oz bottle of oj. As of Friday- I have a huge, painful canker sore under my tongue.
Gross huh? Yeah, makes eating fun, and drinking, and talking, and existing. At this point I think I would prefer an asthma attack- they don't last as long.
Anbesol is fun though. Makes my mouth taste bad AND numbs my lip and the area *around* the canker sore much more than the sore itself. Bleah. There's probably other stuff I could get to use on it, just haven't yet. The weekend was too lazy for that (well, Sunday was, Saturday was otherwise occupied with travel, seeing family, etc.)
Oh, and apparently I'm a penguin:
